Many of the tutorials on the internet that revolve around birthday cards often show admirable and glorious examples that are often too complicated to implement. In today's material we would like to present you a very simple technique, with which you could make your individual birthday cards all alone and without difficulty. And so that the craft ideas are enough challenging and the fun remains big enough, we have decided for the chic and effective technique of pop up cards.
What is Pop Up?
Pop Up is the English word for pop-up cards where "suddenly something emerges" from inside the card. The generated three-dimensionality pleases the eye and stimulates even more the imagination. And even if the technology offered is quite simple, the designer should arm himself with patience and a keen sense of crafting the cards.
We also recommend to join in the tutorial, to gather more ideas and then to implement your own projects that you are guaranteed to come up with in the course of the work.
And now to the practical part of our contribution today: Before we start with the implementation, make sure that you not only have enough time and peace, but also have a suitable corner for crafting. There you could leave your work lying if you can not cope with your project in one day.
-2x (or more) sheets of paper measuring 14.9x 21 cm, which will bend you through the middle
NB! (DIN A 5 is half of DIN A4 - so once through the middle bend)
-Index cards or colorful cardboard for crafting
-Stempel make or buy yourself (The picture motifs, or stamps you can choose freely, depending on creative ideas)
-Felt-tip pen and / or colorful pens or paint
First, you need 2x DIN A 5 sheets of paper (these should weigh more than 60g, in practical terms this is a split DIN A 4 sheet) stacked on top of each other. One sheet is used for the pop up effect and the other becomes a card cover. It is smart to take both in the same color. Also prepare the index cards from which you will cut out the pop ups.
Use the one DIN A 5 sheet to make the front of the card with any technique! Align the design of the front of the card with the theme of the pop-up (horizontal or vertical)! Remember that the recipient first gets to see the front of the card. In this case, the simplest techniques of cutting and pasting rectangles with appropriate birthday motifs are the best.
Customize the front of the card
Create the pop ups
As mentioned above, we use the second DIN A 5 sheet to create the pop-ups that appear inside the card when unfolded. Shortly before we cut out of the index cards all the elements and customize the with stamp, felt pen and colorful pens.
Prepare the pop-up items separately
Measure accurately, fold and fold
Preparing the "stage"
Now we should make from the inner sheet of the resulting map a working Pop Up mechanism. For this purpose we use a ruler and a pen to draw parallel lines from the crease in the middle to the edge, so that some gaps are formed. Parallel to the kink, you determine the distance of the two outer verticals that form the "edge of the stage" (see pictures)
Check the pop up mechanism
Make sure that all surfaces are properly cut and kinked! Carefully secure the elements prepared in the index cards with paper glue and correct the cuts or the entire structure, if necessary. It is important to perform this step correctly before proceeding.
Glue everything together
If everything is right, you can next carefully assemble all the loose elements. First, glue the front of the card to the "stage". For this, it would be extremely important that the top and bottom edges are exactly on top of each other. Protect "the step" from glue!
Attach pop up items and finalize the card
At this point, we bring all decorative elements on the steps of the Pop Up card and finish with any colors and materials. Use the attached pictures to get inspired!
